School Belle Skort {All The Skirts: PeekABoo Pattern Shop & The Fabric Fairy}

School Belle Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The final skirt for All The Skirts: PeekABoo Pattern Shop & The Fabric Fairy is the School Belle Skort.  There are many things that set this uniform skirt above the competition.

School Belle Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

For starters, the School Belle Skort is pleated in the front only.  No more wrinkled, unpleated pleats in the back from sitting on them repeatedly.

Next there are the shorts underneath to keep your school belle covered at all times.  We used the shorts as an opportunity to DISGUISE some fun fabric underneath.  (That’s the theme for this season’s Kids Clothes Week!)  School uniform; boring no more!  We used Nosh fabric from The Fabric Fairy.  Megan was kind enough to let us try out some Nosh fabrics for this pattern, and shorts take less than 1/2 yard, even on the largest sizes.

This particular Nosh Organics fabric is called Capri Blue/Persimmon Stripe.  Nosh Organic knit fabric is totally something you want next to your skin!  Soft, pliable, and simply delicious sounds like food, but it’s really that amazing!  The other fabric we used is khaki from our fabric stash.

Another way the School Belle Skort scores above the competition is an adjustable waist.  So she might be able to wear it for more than one school year.  Or for a full school year at least!  The large hem allows for increased growth too.

The School Belle Skort comes in 13 sizes from 3 months to age 12, spanning preschool through middle school.  Talk about hard working!

School Belle Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The School Belle Skort is easy to put together, but produces professional results.  An A+ for sure.  The pleats are topstitched in place and around the adjustable elastic openings in topstitched down too.  If you are looking for a skirt that can hold up all year long, this is the pattern for you.

And because Annie’s Grandma will surely wonder, no, Annie did not get glasses!  But she was tickled to wear Allegra’s old pair from when she was small for this photo shoot.  She is also wearing her Aster Cardigan from this blog post, and her Music Class Blouse from this blog post.

Sporty Girl Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

Sporty Girl Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The next skirt in our series All The Skirts: PeekABoo Pattern Shop & The Fabric Fairy is the Sporty Girl Skort.  This skirt is for the tomboy in your life.  It will keep up with any sports she plays in style.

Sporty Girl Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Sporty Girl Skort comes in 10 sizes 12 months to 12 years.  We made a size 6 width by size 10 long.  It can be made from knits or woven fabrics.  There are a few extra details, like a pocket and piping that take the Sporty Girl Skort beyond your average exercise skirt.

Sporty Girl Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Sporty Girl Skort is not a fabric hog, all sizes use less than a yard total, including the shorts underneath!  We chose to use French Terry knit fabric from The Fabric Fairy.

Sporty Girl Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

Soft and cozy, this fabric guarentees your little one will want to wear her Sporty Girl Skort after she comes off the field!   This fabric is called Navy Paisley on White Cotton French Terry Fabric, and Annie chose it herself!  The shorts underneath (not pictured, but made of the same fabric as the pocket) are made of Navy Bamboo Cotton Lycra French Terry Fabric.

If it were possible to touch your computer screen, you could feel how soft and comfortable this fabric is!  Like your favorite school sweatshirt…the one you should have thrown out years ago!  Now you can because you can get new fabric from The Fabric Fairy and make a new one.

Sporty Girl Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The side splits on the Sporty Girl Skort offers room for your tomboy to run, jump, catch, shoot, and do whatever she wants in her Sporty Girl Skort!  We firmly believe in playing sports like a girl, and mean that in the very best way possible!  In fact, we even have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to Exercise skirts.

Seattle Skater Skirt {All The Skirts: PeekABoo Pattern Shop & The Fabric Fairy}

Seattle Skater Skirt pattern reviewed by Skirt Fixation

Seattle Skater Skirt pattern reviewed by Skirt Fixation

Last week we gave you a sneak peek of the Seattle Skater Skirt we made when we were reviewing the Spunky Girl Skater Skirt.  The two skirts are basically the same skirt, one in girl sizes and one in women sizes.  We even used fabric from the same line, the Riley Blake Designs knit fabric from The Fabric Fairy.Seattle Skater Skirt pattern reviewed by Skirt Fixation

The Seattle Skater Skirt comes in 8 sizes XXS to XXXL.  Just for reference, a female of almost any size can make herself a skirt like this because where the girl measurements start, the women’s measurements begin.  The only difference we found is that the women’s skirt sits on the hips while the girl skirt sits at the waist.

Seattle Skater Skirt pattern reviewed by Skirt Fixation

The Seattle Skater Skirt can be made with either knit fabric or lightweight woven fabric.  It is a circle skirt with a knit waistband.  No notions are required beyond fabric and thread.

Seattle Skater Skirt pattern reviewed by Skirt Fixation

Just like the Spunky Girls Skater Skirt, the Seattle Skater Skirt has pockets!!   Seriously, can we rave any more about a knit circle skirt with pockets?!?!?

Seattle Skater Skirt pattern reviewed by Skirt Fixation

Again, there are the thoughtful extra details like bartacked pockets and waistband notches which are so helpful in construction.

Seattle Skater Skirt pattern reviewed by Skirt Fixation

This Riley Blake Designs knit fabric, purchased at The Fabric Fairy, is delightfully soft and supple.  These flowers are flowy and geometric at the same time.  This print actually comes in 3 different colorways.

I really don’t have too much more to say about the Seattle Skater Skirt pattern because it’s so similar to the girls pattern.  But that’s a good thing because it means for once I can make myself clothes that are as cute as my daughters!

Cabana Swim Skirt {All The Skirts: PeekABoo Pattern Shop & The Fabric Fairy}

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

The first look from our Modern Chloris mini collection we’re going to review in detail is the tankini.  We started with PeekABoo Pattern Shop’s Cabana Swim Bottoms pattern.  This delightful little pattern has lots and lots and lots of options for making swim bottoms.  Of course you already guessed that we chose the skirted swim bottoms.  The other options are basic bottoms, mini ruffle bottoms, and a plain skirt.

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

This pattern comes in sizes 3 months to 12 years.  You can be sure that Annie will be getting Cabana swim bottoms every summer for many years to come!  (And she is delighted beyond comparison with that situation!)

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

As with all PeekABoo Pattern Shop patterns we’ve sewn, the instructions for the Cabana Swim Bottoms are complete and well illustrated.  In fact, this was the first time I’d sewn with swimwear!  But Amy, the author of PeekABoo Pattern Shop patterns made my work easy and rewarding.  I literally made no mistakes for which I was extremely grateful because I imagine taking out stitches on this fabric would be a pain!

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

One advantage of sewing your own swimwear is that you can make it fit.  Because of Annie’s tall and skinny frame, it’s been years since she’s had a swim suit fit properly.  She literally squealed when she slipped on the Cabana Swim Skirt and kept saying, “I love it, I love it, I’m never taking it off!”  I lifted the skirt to peek at the bottoms underneath, and sure enough; full coverage on her bum!  I think I’d say the same thing.

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

The instructions for the Cabana Swim Bottoms gave the option of finishing the hem with a lettuce edge, and I just adore the look!  Allegra said it’s not her favorite look, but the instructions include an option for regular hemming also.

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

The fabric for the Cabana Swim Skirt came from The Fabric Fairy.  It’s the White Fans on Navy Lycra Swimsuit Fabric from The Fabric Fairy.  The swimsuit lining is from The Fabric Fairy also.  As just an aside here, The Fabric Fairy has so very many beautiful swimwear fabrics that I had difficulty deciding which one to use for the Cabana Swim Bottoms pattern.  In fact, to tell on myself, I ordered a different one, and changed my mind and ordered another one!  And there’s still at least one more that I have my eye on for a swim suit for myself in the very near future.  But I digress!  I wanted to tell you a little about how nice the swimwear fabric from The Fabric Fairy was to work with.  It is thicker than the “activewear” fabric (from Joann Fabrics) used for the tankini top and somehow, not as slippery!

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

Here is a view of the back of the tankini.  You can see that because the pattern is a circle skirt, the fans become oriented sideways on the back of the skirt.  Just something for you to keep in mind when choosing fabric.

Cabana Swim Skirt and Tankini Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

For the tankini top, we started with the Charming Tee and Dress pattern from Lil Luxe Collection.  In order for it to work as swim wear I made a few changes.  I left off the collar, waistband and armhole binding.  I tried using fold over elastic, but didn’t like the look so ripped it off.  Next I tried encasing elastic under the seams, but that made the armholes too tight.  So in the end, by simply folding over the edges and using a zig zag stitch, I was able to make this into a tankini top.

Now it’s time for you to sew along with us.  Use the Rafflecopter below to enter to win $25 from PeekABoo Pattern Shop and $30 from The Fabric Fairy.

Modern Chloris {Sew ‘n Style Lil Luxe Mini Collection}

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Modern ChlorisModern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Once upon a time there was a young girl who loved flowers, lace, pretty hairstyles, and everything dainty. She had never heard of the ancient Greek nymph Chloris, who was associated with spring, flowers, and new growth, but if she had, she would have had an instant bond with her. Ovid wrote of Chloris that: “As she talks, her lips breathe spring roses…” How utterly poetic! Today we bring you a modern Chloris, who shops at the flower market for blooms to make into a crown for the evening theater, and who enjoys relaxing by a pond in the countryside.

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

This theme was inspired by the classic look of the styles used in this collection, and the Greek-inspired Skopelos fabric that is woven throughout each style. The theme also takes from the floral fabric that is a major part of each piece, and the accessories used to complete the looks.

Look 1: Flower Market

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Our little modern Chloris begins the day by dressing for shopping at the flower market in the morning.  She dons her Charming Tee for it’s comfort and peekaboo style in the back.  Next comes her Slim Trousers, with hand sewn lace accents, for full coverage in any situation.  She tops it all off with a Skipalong Skort for it’s modern lines and comfortable yet stylish fit.  In her hand she carries her mini Senna Tote.  It’s just the right size to hold all her pint sized needs.  And of course it’s very cohesive with her modern floral look.

Look 2: Aquatic Countryside

Having returned home, our Modern Chloris quickly constructs her floral crown for the evening.  With hours to spare, she settles on a jaunt into the countryside.  Slipping into her tankini, she layers up in her Rouche Division Top and Paneled Sunsuit maxi skirt.  They make the perfect flowy combination for her afternoon journey, echoing the swim she will indulge in at her destination.

Look 3: Evening Theater

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Refreshed from her afternoon activities, our Modern Chloris dresses for her evening engagement.  The Fairy Tale Dress is the proper garment for a reenactment of some Greek Mythology tales.  The flower crown she constructed earlier assures her role as the Modern Chloris!  She grabs her canvas jacket (a modified Modern Belle Dress) for when the sun goes down.  But the sun will never set on our Modern Chloris, for she will always be clothed in flowers!

The Skyline Skort comes in sizes XXS to XXXL.  It can be made in either knit or woven fabrics.

(The shorts underneath are knit no matter what.  Unless you choose to eliminate them which is another option.)  The waistband, pockets and pocket trim call all be made from different fabrics, if so desired.  The Skyline Skort comes in 3 different lengths, mid-thigh, above knee, and knee lenghts.  Of course, if you are taller than the average female, you will have to add more length, like we did.

It is fast and easy to sew the Skyline Skort pattern.  It only took us about an hour.  As with all Peekaboo Pattern Shop patterns we’ve sewn, the directions are easy to follow and clearly illustrated.

One detail we really love about the Skyline Skort is that gathering across the front.  It’s so flattering, and we had the most amazing fabric; it draped beautifully!

We chose to use black organic bamboo fabric from The Fabric Fairy to make the Skyline Skort.  Can we take a moment to show/tell you about how soft and amazing this fabric is?  If only you could pet your computer screen!  The other fabric we used is Black Magic Paisley Cotton Lycra knit.  It’s durable, a nice weight and comfortable.  Allegra deemed this her new favorite skirt, and wouldn’t even take it off for me to hem the skirt!  Good thing it’s knit fabric and you can do that!

There is a girl version of the Skyline Skort which we will be showing you very soon!

All The Skirts: Peek-A-Boo Pattern Shop & The Fabric Fairy

PPS&TFF Large copy

It’s the day we’ve been waiting for!  We finally get to spill the beans about the next edition of All The Skirts!  We are delighted to be working with Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop and The Fabric Fairy.  Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop was one of the first PDF pattern companies we sewed from (for Annie’s legendary rain jacket!) and frankly, they made it so simple, we wondered why we hadn’t started sewing outerwear sooner!  Since then we’ve sewn up many, many Peek-a-boo patterns, and have become an affiliate for them.  This simply means we think their patterns are so great we’re willing to stand behind them by promoting their patterns whenever we can and sometimes (hopefully!) make a little money from doing so.  All The Skirts: Peekaboo Pattern Shop and The Fabric Fairy

Just yesterday, Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop announced the release of 2 new SKIRT patterns!  You can probably imagine how happy we were about that!  So we will be sewing up all 10 of the Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop skirt patterns in the next 10 weeks.    Did you know that Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop also carries fabric?  They have the cutest knit fabric panels we’ve ever seen and some of the fabrics we all know and love too! And one of you sewing along with us will win a $25 gift card to Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop.panel_Collage We’d advise you to get connected with Peek-A-Boo Pattern Shop for advance notice of sales, new fabric and patterns, and more fun!  You can find them on Instagram Facebook  Pinterest  &  Youtube  Sign up for their newsletter at the bottom of the page.

We are going to be using fabric from The Fabric Fairy to make the Peek-A-Boo Pattern Shop skirts.  The Fabric Fairy is owned and operated by Megan and is an online fabric store that offers mostly KNIT fabrics (with a few awesome exceptions like diaper making supplies and boardshorts fabric.)  Anyone who loves a great deal on fabric will have a glorious time browsing the Almost Gone, Bargains and By The Bolt sections of The Fabric Fairy.  Megan’s about page says every customer is as important to her as if they were her only customer, and we have found that to be true!!  We love a fabric shop with great customer service.  KnitCollage

1. Kimono Nylon Lycra Swimwear,  2. Nosh Organics Natural Polka Dots 3. The Milky Way Rib Knit

4. Navy Anchors on Rayon Knit  5. Primary Rainbow Stripe Knit  6.  Riley Blake Quatrefoil Cotton/Lycra Knit
