Baby Circle Skirts

I apologize in advance if today’s post makes you want a baby!  Recently my brother and his wife gifted me with a niece had a baby girl!  So I did the only logical thing an aunt could do and sewed up some tiny baby girl clothes. I started with the Spunky Girl Skater skirt pattern by Peekaboo Pattern Shop because it probably doesn’t get any cuter than a baby circle skirt.  One cool thing about sewing a baby circle skirt is the tiny amount of fabric required.   I was able to get these skirts from leftover fabric and have enough remaining to make matching bloomers and hats. Because, hello cuteness!!  Another reason I chose the Spunky Girl Skater skirt pattern is because if goes down to 3 month size whereas many of my patterns start at size 2T.

The matching diaper cover you’ve seen here before, it’s the Perfect Diaper + Nappy Cover free tutorial from Dana Made It.  This time I made it from knit fabrics, and it worked out just fine!  Okay, so it’s super cute.

The matching hat is also a Skirt Fixation favorite baby gift, and also a  free tutorial by Make It Love It.

The floral fabric is leftover from the Skipalong Skort from our Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection, and is Art Gallery Skopelos Knit Paparounes Crimson Fabric.

The ruffle fabric is leftover from Annie’s boatneck top.  You can get your own here.  Bisou Stretch Mini Ruffle Knit Black Fabric

The pink fabric is leftover from an Uptown Downtown dress.  This is my favorite knit fabric from JoAnn Fabrics, (Sew Classic Knits Solid Interlock MANY COLORS)  and I think I’ve gotten it in every color available.  It’s stable and washes and wears well.

With leftover leftovers I appliqued the flowers onto the onesies to complete the ensembles.  Just a little fancy refashioning of a plain white onesie!

As you can see, there are two baby circle skirt sets here, and I only have one niece!  So the other set is available in our shop, coming soon right here.

And most of all, Happy Birth-day little niece!  I foresee many skirts in your future!

Fairy Tale Dress {Modern Chloris Mini Wardrobe Collection}

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

The final piece in our Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection is the Oliver+S Fairy Tale Dress.  This dress is truly a labor of love.  It is not a fast sew, but all the details and little thoughtful elements make it a special occasion dress.

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

We made the Fairy Tale Dress for the third and final look, Evening Theater.  We paired this special dress with the Ruffle Jacket and a floral crown.  Nothing more needed!

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Fairy Tale Dress is fully lined.  This makes it very couture.

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

My first plan was to use pink pleather (like on the Mini Senna Tote) for the belt and collar, but it didn’t lay right, so I ended up using the same fabric as the lining.

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

The sweet little tulip sleeves are also lined.  The instructions made putting the sleeves together very easy and they came out so lovely.  It’s one of those little details that make this dress so special.

The Fairy Tale Dress zips up the back.  It’s one of the prettiest invisible zippers I’ve ever installed.

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

The tulle layer under the skirt helps to puff out the skirt, keeping its shape.  Another thoughtful feature of this pattern is the deep hem which you can let out as your daughter grows.  Pretty nice since you put so much hard work into it!

The fabric for this dress comes from the Skopelos line by Katarina Rocella for Art Gallery Fabrics. It is called
Art Gallery Skopelos Nisi Flora Oceanon Fabric
(affiliate link) The combination of flowers, lace and colors make this fabric just as special as the dress on which we used it!

Here’s a final collage showing how the Fairy Tale Dress coordinates with the other pieces of the mini wardrobe collection.  You can see the whole collection here, which also includes links to the details of each piece.

We’d like to thank Art Gallery Fabrics for supplying the fabric for this mini wardrobe collection.  Also, Lil Luxe Collection for inspiring the mini wardrobe and providing the Lil Luxe Collection patterns.  It was truly an epic undertaking, and we loved every minute of it!

Mini Senna Tote

The second to last piece in the Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection is the mini Senna Tote. I wasn’t sure if I was going to have time to complete it with all the other pieces I had planned. But Annie insisted. And part of the idea behind the mini wardrobe collection was child input, so…

The rose pink pleather really reflects Annie’ choice. She would have all pink all the time!  The rose pleather, or vegan leather if you prefer, came from Girl Charlee.  They have just about every color you could need!

Mini Senna Tote sewed by Skirt Fixation

The main fabric used to make the mini Senna Tote is called Kladi Underlight. Recognize it?  That’s because we chose the other color way for the maxi skirt from the Aquatic Countryside look.  It’s from Katarina Rocella’s Skopelos line of fabric, as are all the fabric in this mini wardrobe collection and was generously given to us by Art Gallery Fabrics.

The contrast pocket and inside fabric is from our fabric stash, it might be shot cotton, and we used it to line the dress from this mini collection also.

Annie carried her mini Senna Tote for the Flower Market look, but it does go with everything in the mini wardrobe collection.  Really it might be both of our favorite piece from the whole Modern Chloris collection!  It’s so delicate and miniature looking.

Mini Senna Tote sewed by Skirt Fixation

Okay, here are the top secret details on how you can make a mini Senna Tote for yourself, I mean your little one!  You need Senna Tote pattern.  Print out the pattern pieces at 50% instead of 100%.  Be sure to add back seam allowances because they will have been shrunk by 50% too.  Sewing a 1/8 inch seam allowance could get pretty tricky on parts of the mini Senna Tote.  Ask me how I know!

Mini Senna Tote sewed by Skirt Fixation

The cool part of making a mini Senna Tote is that it takes less materials and less time too!  I think I will make one at 75% next!   In that case, you would add 1/8 back to the seam allowances I think.  The easiest way to figure out the length of zipper you will need is to measure your shrunken pattern piece.  In our case, we were using a zipper we harvested off of a thrifted purse.  We couldn’t find the right shade of zipper, but the purse was as cheap as a zipper plus the shipping it would have cost us to get exactly the right shade of pink!

Mini Senna Tote sewed by Skirt Fixation

To figure the length of the straps, the easiest thing is to just measure with a measuring tape on the intended recipient.   The 50% measure doesn’t work too well here either.  We made the straps at 50% width, but you would widen these if you wanted.  These work perfectly for Annie’s little hands.

Annie absolutely adores her mini Senna Tote.  She stores all her most special treasures in it and has (so far) managed to keep it away from her little brothers!

Charming Tee & Dress Pattern Review

Charming Tee and Dress pattern review by Skirt Fixation

Charming Tee and Dress pattern review by Skirt Fixation

The final piece of clothing from the Flower Market look in our Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection is the Charming Tee.  Like the Slim Trouser leggings we were reviewing yesterday, our version of the Charming Tee is a foundation piece.  After all, not every piece of clothing can be an explosion of floral!  (Although you might think Annie and I wish that was possible!)  Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt FixationThe Charming Tee & Dress pattern, by Lil Luxe Collection, can be either a basic tee, or something, well, charming!  The Charming Tee & Dress pattern comes in 8 sizes from 18 months to 8 years.  The pattern is well written, no mistakes, and full of helpful instructions for sewing with knits, lengthening or shortening the pattern, and different looks.  And yet I changed up the pattern even more!

Charming Tee and Dress pattern review by Skirt Fixation

The Charming Tee & Dress pattern has a hole in the center of the back where you can insert a charm if desired.  I made the tankini from the Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection using this look.  But for the Flower Market look we wanted more of a fall look, and on those chilly fall mornings, a large hole in the back of one’s shirt isn’t exactly warm.  So we sandwiched a piece of fabric (Fish Scholeio Intense from the Skopelos line, provided by Art Gallery Fabrics) between the back piece and the back lining.  Then, instead of sewing them right sides sides together and turning the lining to the inside, I simple topstitched around the hole, similar to the reverse applique technique.  Of course since the edges won’t fray since it’s knit.  The other change I made to the pattern was to lengthen the sleeves.  Tall people (and people with tall mothers) have long arms too!Charming Tee and Dress pattern review by Skirt Fixation

Oh that Deep Dark Ocean knit!  It’s my absolute favorite solid knit fabric, again from Art Gallery Fabrics.  I have a top made out of this fabric and can testify to it’s comfort and softness.  There has been no pilling on anything we’ve made out of Art Gallery Fabrics knit fabric, and believe me, they get a lot of wear.  Like this skirt…it’s now being worn constantly by Aria (I originally made it for Allegra) and still no pilling!

Charming Tee and Dress pattern review by Skirt Fixation

Annie loves the fit and comfort of this tee.  I’m glad to have a great basic t-shirt pattern to add to her wardrobe.  Next I’m going to make her a solid white Charming Tee because she really needs one for fall.Charming Tee and Dress pattern review by Skirt Fixation

Here’s the flat lay collage to show you how well the Charming Tee works with the other pieces of our Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection.  What about you, what’s your favorite basic t-shirt pattern?  Does it allow you to mix it up like this one?

Skipalong Skort {All The Skirts: PeekABoo Pattern Shop & The Fabric Fairy}

Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The next skirt in this edition of All The Skirts is the Skipalong Skort.  I know I probably say this every time, but this is Annie’s new favorite skirt!  She loves so much about it.  Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Skipalong Skort, by Peekaboo Pattern Shop comes in 13 different sizes from 3 months to 12 years.  Good thing, because I’ll be sewing these up for Annie for a long time to come! Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

And then when she grows out of the girl sizes, there’s the Skyline Skort in women’s sizing.  I actually made the skirt option on the Skipalong Skort pattern by leaving off the shorts underneath. Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Now when given a choice, I almost always add shorts under a little girl’s skirt, but you probably remember this was part of the Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection and we were including this skirt in our Flower Market look which included leggings.  So no shorts this time.  But for sure next time!Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Skipalong Skort is a knit skirt pattern.  With pockets.  (That deserves it’s own sentence!)  And colored accents and little optional bow.  There are two length options, and you can easily do what we did and lengthen it by cutting the length to a larger size if you have a tall child too. Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

One thing I really appreciate about this pattern is dimensions for the rectangular pattern pieces.  It saves paper and time in tiling and cutting.  Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but the instructions for the Skip Along Skort, like literally EVERY PeekABoo pattern I’ve sewn, are easy to follow and well illustrated.  At no time was I confused or unable to follow an instruction.  But don’t worry, if you get stuck, just email Amy, she’s very helpful!Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

Since I eliminated the shorts, the Skipalong Skort was a super fast sew.  I think I completed it in less than an hour.Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

All the fabrics used are generously sponsored by Art Gallery Fabrics.  There are 2 solid knit fabrics used for the waistband, pocket and pocket trim.  The main knit fabric is from the Skopelos line, called Paparounes Crimson. Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

I have seen many things made from this knit fabric, and admired them all, but let me tell you, this fabric is even more vibrant in person and softer in hand!Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt FixationI promised to show you how well each piece pairs with all the others in the Modern Chloris mini wardrobe collection, so here’s the flat lay collage.  Either top can be worn with the Skipalong Skort, and of course the leggings, jacket, and mini Senna Tote accessorize perfectly!Skipalong Skort sewn by Skirt Fixation

Modern Chloris {Sew ‘n Style Lil Luxe Mini Collection}

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Modern ChlorisModern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Once upon a time there was a young girl who loved flowers, lace, pretty hairstyles, and everything dainty. She had never heard of the ancient Greek nymph Chloris, who was associated with spring, flowers, and new growth, but if she had, she would have had an instant bond with her. Ovid wrote of Chloris that: “As she talks, her lips breathe spring roses…” How utterly poetic! Today we bring you a modern Chloris, who shops at the flower market for blooms to make into a crown for the evening theater, and who enjoys relaxing by a pond in the countryside.

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

This theme was inspired by the classic look of the styles used in this collection, and the Greek-inspired Skopelos fabric that is woven throughout each style. The theme also takes from the floral fabric that is a major part of each piece, and the accessories used to complete the looks.

Look 1: Flower Market

Modern Chloris sewn by Skirt Fixation

Our little modern Chloris begins the day by dressing for shopping at the flower market in the morning.  She dons her Charming Tee for it’s comfort and peekaboo style in the back.  Next comes her Slim Trousers, with hand sewn lace accents, for full coverage in any situation.  She tops it all off with a Skipalong Skort for it’s modern lines and comfortable yet stylish fit.  In her hand she carries her mini Senna Tote.  It’s just the right size to hold all her pint sized needs.  And of course it’s very cohesive with her modern floral look.

Having returned home, our Modern Chloris quickly constructs her floral crown for the evening.  With hours to spare, she settles on a jaunt into the countryside.  Slipping into her tankini, she layers up in her Rouche Division Top and Paneled Sunsuit maxi skirt.  They make the perfect flowy combination for her afternoon journey, echoing the swim she will indulge in at her destination.

Refreshed from her afternoon activities, our Modern Chloris dresses for her evening engagement.  The Fairy Tale Dress is the proper garment for a reenactment of some Greek Mythology tales.  The flower crown she constructed earlier assures her role as the Modern Chloris!  She grabs her canvas jacket (a modified Modern Belle Dress) for when the sun goes down.  But the sun will never set on our Modern Chloris, for she will always be clothed in flowers!
