Daphne Skirt {All The Skirts: SLPco & Phat Quarters}

Daphne Skirt sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Daphne skirt is the next skirt to walk down the runway for our All The Skirts: Simple Life Pattern Company & Phat Quarters series.

Daphne Skirt sewn by Skirt Fixation

Like last week’s Tilly Skirt, the Daphne skirt is a super fun layered skirt.  The Daphne skirt can be made in 9 sizes from 2T to 12.  In other words, your little girl will be able to wear a skirt like this for many years to come!

The Daphne skirt can be made as a single layer skirt with pockets, or a double layer skirt like we made with no pockets.  There are no pattern pieces with the Daphne skirt pattern, but a cutting chart instead.  I love that as it saves paper, time and cutting.

The Daphne skirt is quick and easy to put together.  There are additional instructions for adding a lace underskirt if you wish.  The Daphne skirt has a wide waistband which is flat in the front and elastic in the back.  Annie tells me this makes it really comfortable.

The pattern recommends woven fabrics, but we decided to try and see if knit could be used for the overskirt.  And yep, we’d call it a success!

These fabrics are from Phat Quarters.  The striped fabric is called Row by Row Deep, an Art Gallery Knit fabric designed by Bonnie Christine for her Cultivate line.  (Remember when we used Cultivate fabric on this blouse?)  Of course it’s soft and flowy and I want some more to make something for myself!

The waistband and underskirt are made from peppered cotton.  Phat Quarters has a whole bunch of peppered cottons, each one lovely.  This color brown is called Coffee Bean Peppered Cotton, and made me crave a mocha latte the whole time I was sewing with it!  And I haven’t had a mocha latte in years if that tells you how good this fabric is!

Penny Pencil Skirt {All The Skirts: SLPco & Phat Quarters}

Penny Pencil Skirt sewn by Skirt Fixation using Art Gallery Fabrics denim from Phat Quarters. A perfect denim skirt for a little girl!

The next skirt we made for All The Skirts: SLPco & Phat Quarters is the Penny Pencil Skirt.  And we found the perfect fabric to sew it with.  Let’s start with a review of the Penny Pencil Skirt pattern.

Penny Pencil Skirt sewn by Skirt Fixation using Art Gallery Fabrics denim from Phat Quarters. A perfect denim skirt for a little girl!

The Penny Pencil Skirt can be sewn in 9 sizes from 2T to 12.  There are 4 different styles included in the pattern; Mini, Short Pencil, Long Pencil and Flounce.  We sewed the Long Pencil version.

This pattern has a rating of beginner.  There are 4 different pocket styles, we made the classic version.  Just the pocket pieces and the flounce have pattern pieces to print, dimension are given for the other pieces.  The instruction are illustrated with photographs.  The back of the wide waistband has several rows of elastic, ensuring a perfect and comfortable fit.

One little detail we love about the Penny Pencil skirt is how the side seams aren’t really on the sides, but wrapped around the front!  It’s so slimming, and modern, and cute!  Those of us at Skirt Fixation who are larger than a size 12 seriously wish this pattern came in women’s sizes!  It is such a stylish pencil skirt for a girl.

The Penny Pencil skirt requires woven fabric, and so we went straight for some Art Gallery Fabrics new denim from Phat Quarters.  After much deliberation, we finally chose the Canyon Sunset color.  This is a true, heavyweight denim, much like your favorite jeans are made from.  Or your favorite denim skirt!  So of course we had to do double topstitching on everywhere just like a ready to wear denim skirt.  Again, all of us who didn’t get a skirt made from this luscious fabric have a new item on the wish list!  Oh, and we tucked a little Bari J. fabric inside the pocket too!

We posted a photo on Instagram of a whole bunch of other fabrics that coordinate with this Art Gallery Fabrics denim.  But for this outfit, we chose some knit leftover from making this Uptown Downtown Dress to make a new summer top for Annie.  We chose the new Camden Raglan pattern from Hey June Patterns.

Yep, this is the smaller version of our very favorite top, the Lane Raglan!  And the best thing about it is that Annie is in the smallest size (a 6) so she will get to wear this pattern for a long time (it goes up to size 16!)  And then she can graduate to the Lane Raglan pattern with the rest of us!.  The Camden Raglan is as fantastic as the Lane Raglan.  We made the elbow sleeve, curved hem version.  But we’re excited to try the other versions too.

Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt {All The Skirts: SLPco & Phat Quarters}

Pepper's Peekaboo Skirt sewn by Skirt Fixation using Star Wars fabric from Phat Quarters

Pepper's Peekaboo Ruffle Skirt sewn by Skirt Fixation using Star Wars fabric from Phat Quarters

The first skirt in our All The Skirts series with Simple Life Pattern Company (or SLPco) is Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt.  This skirt is as fun as it’s name, and of course we had to choose a very fun fabric to sew it up!

Pepper's Peekaboo Ruffle Skirt sewn by Skirt Fixation using Star Wars fabric from Phat Quarters

Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt is a fun skirt with 3 layers of ruffles, ties, pick ups and sheer girlyness.  Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt for girls comes in 9 sizes from 2t to 12.  We made size 8 width and size 12 length, according to our usual measurements for our model, Annie.  The pattern states this is a beginner level sewing project.  Making Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt for girls takes a little time due to the ruffles, gathering and layers, but of course you can see why it’s worth it!

There are no paper pattern pieces to assemble and cut out, measurements are given for the 8 needed pieces.  The tips include instructions to finish all the inside seams of this girl’s skirt professionally.  Although we did not include a photo of the inside, this skirt is very clean on the inside also.

The sewing instructions for Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt is illustrated with photographs.  They are very simple to follow and easy to understand.  We did find a small error in the instructions which Katie, the owner of SLPco will probably fix in future versions.  If you have Version 1, just note that in step 8 the ruffle is attached to the underskirt, not the to skirt.

One really neat feature of Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt is the tie casing with a little tie to make a little pickup on the front of the skirt.  It’s such an adorable feature and allows you to show off several different fabrics in this skirt.  Or you can un-scrunch the tie and even take it out for a second look.

Speaking of fabrics, we can’t really take credit for putting this group of perfectly complementing fabrics together.  This combination was put together by Phat Quarters and is available in their shop.

With Star Wars fabric being such a hot commodity right now, you’ll be excited to know Phat Quarters has a whole section of their shop devoted to Star Wars fabricsThis combination is the BB8 bundle which includes Star Wars BB8 print by Camelot Fabric, Tangerine Plus Sign print by Anne Kelle for Robert Kaufman, Red Houndstooth by Maywood Studio, and White Triangles on Black print by Anne Kelle for Robert Kaufman.

Of course Annie had to give Pepper’s Peekaboo Skirt the twirl test.  And it passed!  So a little Star Wars loving girl can be girly and geeky at the same time.

SLPCo & Phat Quarters

Today we get to announce the next edition of  All The Skirts.  In case you’re new around here, All The Skirts is a series where we choose a pattern company and sew up all their skirt patterns.  This time we are going to sew up all the skirt patterns from Simple Life Pattern Company (or SLPco as you may see them referred to) using fabric from Phat Quarters.

website_logo2_SLPco

Simple Life Pattern Company has 6 skirt patterns for girls.  As you look at these skirt patterns, you might notice we have a small problem.  One of the skirt patterns is for baby girls, and we don’t have any baby girls on the staff at Skirt Fixation!  So our good friend Teri from Fa Sew La has agreed to sew up and review this pattern for her adorable baby girl!  Stay tuned for that cuteness later in this edition.
