Boys Look from Nothing But (k)Net

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

Nothing But Knit theme sewn by Skirt Fixation. Fun children's clothing event!

Yesterday we got to share our Nothing But (k)Net look for the Project Run & Play week 1 sew along.  We summarized our boy look as follows:

Boys outfits:
Shirts pattern: Oliver + S Parachute Polo

Shirt fabric: Mabel Madison (sold out, try this airplane fabric instead)
Sweatpants pattern: Oliver + S Parachute Sweatpants
Sweatpants fabric: Sweatshirt Fleece Navy Fabric & Sweatshirt Fleece Charcoal Fabric

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

But we have so much more to share with you, including a deluge of photos!

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

This is the 3rd time I’ve used the Oliver + S Parachute Polo pattern to make these two boys matching shirts.  I made only one change to the pattern this time; I narrowed the sleeves at the bottom.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

The first time I made these shirts, I made short sleeves, so it wasn’t an issue.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

When I made them the long sleeved striped shirts, I discovered the wrists were a bit floppy, hence the change.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

The contrast fabric on the shirt collars, plackets and pocket is some blue linen from the stash.  Although you can use a knit fabric for these three places on the shirt, I like to use a woven because it helps stabilize these potentially tricky spots.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

To help differentiate between the two shirts for dressing purposes, I made the buttons different colors on the two shirts.  David (or Dawg in yesterday’s story!) got navy blue buttons and Baby got white ones.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

Do you see the differences in the Oliver + S Parachute Sweatpants?  David/Dawg’s are gray with a blue side stripe and Baby’s are blue with a gray side stripe.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

If Baby’s Oliver + S Parachute Sweatpants look familiar it’s because he’s wearing the pair I made his older brother in this blog post in October.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

I know they fit him partly because of the elastic around the ankles makes them not too long, but would someone please make my baby’s growth slow down?

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

I did lengthen David/Dawg’s sweatpants by a couple of inches because while the other pair still fits him, he’s growing too, and it won’t be long until they’re too short.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

These boys have been eating, sleeping and playing in these pants.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

They must be super comfortable because they barely let me take them off for laundering, and then put them on straight out of the dryer!

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

Baby has taken to wearing a hat.  He calls all hats “cowboy hat.”  He likes to change the angle to a rakish angle now and then.  Obviously, I’m completely wrapped around his tiny finger!

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

The boys had so much fun this day with this photoshoot.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

Allegra took all the photos, and at one point I saw her laying flat on the ground to get a good shot!  Totally worth it, too.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

The lighting was perfect, and she edited all the photos for the grunge/street scene photos too.

Boy Look from Skirt Fixation's Nothing But (k)Net look.

I love how the whole photo essay yesterday turned out so artistically.

Come back tomorrow for more about the girl look from our Nothing But (k)Net sewing event.

O+S Raglan Tee for Kids Clothes Week Day 2

Oliver+S Field Trip Raglan T-shirt sewn by Skirt Fixation KCW day 2

This week blog posts are going to be shorter because it’s Kids Clothes Week and that means sewing takes the stage, front and center!

Oliver+S Field Trip Raglan T-shirt sewn by Skirt Fixation KCW day 2

You might remember that last season of Kids Clothes Week we were contributors.  Yesterday our School Belle Skort was featured on the Kids Clothes Week blog.

Oliver+S Field Trip Raglan T-shirt sewn by Skirt Fixation KCW day 2

Today’s Kids Clothes Week sew is an Oliver+S Field Trip raglan t-shirt for Thomas.  Thomas requested a long sleeve shirt for fall, and I was more than happy to oblige.  I picked up this airplane fabric from Mabel Madison during a crazy good sale.  You can see the other Mabel Madison fabric we used for All The Skirts: Clever Charlotte & Mabel  Madison here and here.

Oliver+S Field Trip Raglan T-shirt sewn by Skirt Fixation KCW day 2

Since I’ve sewn Thomas this pattern before three times, it was quick and easy to cut out and sew up another one.  Except this time I used the long sleeves instead of short sleeves.  Actually, there is no short sleeve pattern piece, that was just my modification for summer!  And this is not the first Field Trip Raglan T-shirt I’ve made for Thomas with an airplane theme during Kids Clothes Week.

Oliver+S Field Trip Raglan T-shirt sewn by Skirt Fixation KCW day 2

This field trip raglan is color blocked with the back being solid navy.  I did this because while the airplane fabric is fun, I thought too much wouldn’t look right on a 10 year old boy, and just used it for the front panel.  The navy blue fabric is Art Gallery Fabrics knit from Imagine Gnats.  The sleeves fabric is some “famous maker” fabric from JoAnns.  It doesn’t have quite the stretch as the other two knits used on this shirt which makes the sleeves quite skinny.  But they happen to fit Thomas’ arms perfectly, so it’s all good!

Alright, I told you it was going to be short and sweet!  Now it’s back to sewing for me.  But if you want some more sewing inspiration, pop over to Sewing Stadium where today’s sewing competition is OVER THE TOP!  You will be awed…

Orchid skirt and top with Mabel Madison corduroy and a vintage lace tablecloth.

We will be donating the Chickadee skirt and blouse to Simple Simon & Co’s Skirting The Issue event.  Some little girl is going to be so happy!

Did you see the awesome link up?  We were so glad to see you had sewn up some Clever Charlotte patterns and used Mabel Madison fabric too!  Once again, the Skirt Fixation team picked out their favorites:

Annie:  I love this coat.  It is really fancy and I love the color too!  (It was the Shaffer sister’s flip of the Chickadee pattern that introduced us to Clever Charlotte, so Annie just may be getting one of these someday!)

Aria:  I love this Olivine dress sewn by Deux Soriceaux.  The pattern of the fabric and the pattern of the dress are wonderful!

Allegra:  I love this outfit by Siestas and Sewing.  It looks like it was planned so carefully and the pleating detail under the skirt is fantastic.

Audrey:  This outfit is fantastic!  I love the little appliquéd fox so much!  So-Cal Sewing Mom totally rocked this Chickadee.

We are delighted to finish up All The Skirts: Clever Charlotte & Mabel Madison with the giveaway winner.

Natasha Tung, you are the proud owner of 2 new Clever Charlotte patterns and a $30 gift certificate to Mabel Madison!!  Everyone else, hurry over to Mabel Madison, where it is your last day to use the 10% discount with the coupon code SKIRTFIX.  (And their year end clearance event!)  And you just have until January 8th over at Clever Charlotte to use the code FIXATION14 for a 20% discount.  (We already did!)

We’d like you to know that while the Clever Charlotte and Mabel Madison edition of All The Skirts is finished, next Friday we will announce another pattern company and fabric company pairing for an all new edition of All The Skirts!  These skirts are going to be amazing!  See you next week!

Orchid Pattern {All The Skirts: Clever Charlotte & Mabel Madison}

Clever Charlotte's Orchid Pattern sewn with Mabel Madison fabric by Skirt Fixation

Clever Charlotte's Orchid Pattern sewn with Mabel Madison fabric by Skirt Fixation

The second of the Clever Charlotte skirt patterns is the Orchid Pattern.  This skirt (and blouse) pattern delight, as usual!  The Mabel Madison corduroy we received for this pattern has such a vintage vibe to it, echoing the vintage feel of the Orchid pattern.  Let’s start our Orchid pattern review with the skirt!

Clever Charlotte's Orchid pattern sewn with Mabel Madison fabric by Skirt Fixation

We received this fabulous Stenzo corduroy from Mabel Madison and instantly fell in love!  It holds up marvelously to the dramatic pleats of the Clever Charlotte Orchid skirt.  This little skirt if very easy to whip up, and has a very professional finished look.

The Orchid pattern skirt has a zipper (the pattern cleverly allows for either an invisible zipper or regular) that creates a fitted look.  It would be easy to add buttonhole elastic to this skirt like the Clever Charlotte Chickadee skirt, but we didn’t do that.  This time!  This is one sweet little skirt we will definitely be turning to often.

After we made the Orchid skirt, we were searching through our stash for the perfect vintage material to make the Orchid top, and were coming up short until we remembered a vintage lace tablecloth we were given by an aunt.  If you follow us on Instagram, you saw us deliberating about whether or not to use such a treasure, but as you can see, the results are well worth it!

We lined it with a soft, deep green peachskin fabric and left the arms unlined to dramatize the lace effect.  Due to the nature of the lace tablecloth, we made a few other changes.

Clever Charlotte's Orchid pattern sewn with Mabel Madison fabric by Skirt Fixation

We changed the back of the Orchid blouse pattern to have two buttons (found these two beauties in the stash!) at the top, then hand stitched it closed the rest of the way down so the pattern across the back would match.

Since there were already two layers, we changed the neckline by omitting the facing and finishing it with wide seam binding.  It adds to the vintage feel of the pattern.

We love the vintage-ness of the pattern, fabric and tried to replicate them with the photo shoot.  A doll and tea party seemed to fit the ticket, as did the large hair bow.

Annie did an excellent job at looking somber in some of the photos, like the girls did in the vintage photographs we showed her.

Chickadee Pattern {All The Skirts: Clever Charlotte & Mabel Madison}

Chickadee Pattern sewn by Skirt Fixation

Chickadee Pattern sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Chickadee pattern from Clever Charlotte is simply adorable!  We sewed up both the top and the skirt patterns.  They make an awesome pair!

Mabel Madison fabric

We used corduroy fabric from Mabel Madison for the skirt, and let us reassure you, this is some amazing material to work with.  Soft and buttery, brightly colored, and warm.

Clever Charlotte Chickadee Pattern Sewn by Skirt Fixation

We found just the right coordinating blue in our stash to make the Chickadee top, and at our style advisor’s suggestion (Hi, Mr. Skirt Fixation!!) we added some of the blue in the form of a ruffle to the edging of the Chickadee skirt.  This really accentuates the faux wrap feature of the skirt which is one thing we really, really love about it!

Clever Charlotte Chickadee Pattern Sewn by Skirt Fixation

The Chickadee skirt is fully lined, and here you can see a glimpse of the lining (also available at Mabel Madison.)  The top portion of the Chickadee top is also lined, making it very comfortable for the wearer.

Clever Charlotte Chickadee Pattern Sewn by Skirt Fixation

We made only a few changes to the pattern…we lengthened it so Annie will be able to wear it for a longer time, we added the ruffle, and we made a waistband across the top.

Clever Charlotte Chickadee Pattern Sewn by Skirt Fixation

To the Chickadee top, we only made one small change, we made a buttonhole instead of a loop of elastic for the button.  Because our machine does that automatically and prettily!

Clever Charlotte Chickadee Pattern Sewn by Skirt Fixation

This Clever Charlotte pattern was a joy to work with!  The directions were clear, easy and helpful.  One word of warning, be sure to keep your left and right fronts straight on both the skirt and the top so the offset pleat lines up with the wrap lines.

The pleat in the back is just too cute too!

Clever Charlotte Chickadee Pattern Sewn by Skirt Fixation

We think Clever Charlotte patterns are a very, very good bargain because with many of the patterns, you are actually getting two patterns for the asking price.  A good example is the Chickadee, it comes with the top and skirt patterns both.
