Summer Capsule Wardrobe for a Girl Toddler

Summer capsule wardrobe for girl toddler by Skirt Fixation

Cooler weather is upon us, and I realized that I never shared all of Baby’s summer capsule wardrobe!  We shared a couple of items with reviews, so today’s post is more about sharing the fabric and patterns used.  Well, okay, and lots of cute baby picture too!

First up are the Janie Dresses I made her.  They are reviewed here.

This first one uses Art Gallery Floraison lit jersey knit in multi fabric.  It is such a fun, colorful dress!  Whereas most of a capsule wardrobe should be kept to a similar color scheme, dresses are stand alone pieces and can be as wild and colorful as you want!

The little navy blue collar on this one is so sweet!  It uses denim knit fabric.  (More about this neat fabric below.)

The other Janie Dress uses rust bamboo rayon jersey fabric.  She absolutely loves these dresses.  We love to hug her when she’s wearing this one, partly because the fabric is so soft!!

The last Janie Dress is this one.  I used the softest, prettiest robin’s egg blue jersey fabric from CaliFabrics.  You can read all about it here.

Next up is the little pair of bloomers I made for her using my Cricut Maker Machine and some blue chambray fabric from my stash.  Get the details in this post.  These go with everything I sewed for this summer capsule wardrobe.

I also sewed her a onesie using the Eeny Meeny Miny Moe Bodysuit pattern and some Art Gallery Foliage Escape jersey knit in lapis from her 1 year old capsule wardrobe!

And just because I knew she would love it, I sewed her a tutu from charcoal tulle.  I used the Violette Field Threads Ellie Skirt pattern.  (You can read our review of this pattern here.)

Baby loves textures in all clothing, so as you can see in this photo, her chubby little fingers are almost constantly feeling and rubbing the tulle fabric.  It’s quite adorable, really.

She’s also wearing one of the two plain white onesies I made her using the Eeny Meeny Miny Moe Bodysuit pattern and Riley Blake Designs white knit.

Because making two is just about as simple as making one, I used the Ellie Skirt pattern but used some black lace from my stash instead of tulle.  (Similar fabric here.)

Baby is also wearing a grey knit Eeny Meeny Miny Moe Bodysuit I sewed for her.  I used fabric from my stash, but this fabric is just as nice if not nicer!

Not modeled and unblogged but well worn items for Baby’s summer capsule wardrobe:

This is a Spunky Girl Skater Skirt (pattern from Peekaboo Pattern Shop.)  It goes with about everything you can imagine!

It’s hard to capture on camera, but this denim knit fabric has a really fun denim texture and look but it’s a knit fabric!  It only has 2 way stretch, but because this is a circle skit, that doesn’t matter as long as you make sure the stretch goes across the body on the waistband.

Vivienne Skirt:

You can read our review of this pattern here.  We used Art Gallery Fabric’s Emmy Grace cotton fabric for the top skirt and some rayon challis for the underskirt and ruffles.

Shift Dresses:

We used the Eeny Meeny Miny Moe pattern to sew her two shift dresses.  The one pictured above is from the same grey fabric as the onesie show.  The other is a green and white stripe knit jersey fabric like this one.

As with the other capsule wardrobes, all of the separates can be mixed, so Baby looks somewhat put together no matter who gets her dressed for the day!  Here you can see her wearing the blue floral bodysuit with the grey tutu.

Again, her chubby hands in the fabric folds of the tutu just melt my heart!  While this capsule wardrobe didn’t turn out quite as cohesive as her 1st capsule wardrobe or her 2nd capsule wardrobe, it met several goals and went together good enough!

The biggest goal for this summer capsule wardrobe was to sew it entirely from my stash of fabric!  And with the exception of the Robin’s egg blue Janie dress, I succeeded!  (But who could resist a dress that matched her eyes that perfectly?

Janie Dress sewn by Skirt Fixation

Today is our stop on the Project Run & Play Shop Grand Opening blog tour!  It’s an exciting day to be able to share not only these Janie dresses with you, but the whole Project Run & Play Shop.  This idea has been over a year in the making, and it’s so delightful to have a place to offer the amazing Project Run & Play design all in one spot!

The whole month of July is the grand opening celebration.  There is a huge giveaway, sales each week, and every single pattern is being featured and sewn by a talented Project Run & Play designer.

This week, dresses are featured.  They are for sale for 20% off in the shop.  We got to sew up the Janie Dress and Peplum pattern.  This darling knit dress has quite a few options, and we couldn’t help but sew up two different version.

The Janie Dress and Peplum can be made in 13 sizes from 6 months to 12 years.  We sewed a size 12 months for Baby.  The pattern is very thorough with photo illustrations and detailed instructions.

One thing we love about this pattern is that cute collar!  It is perfectly drafted, and is super easy to attach.  Plus it lays right exactly where it’s supposed to at all times, which is very important!

As you might know, knit neckbands are a particular point of interest to us when we sew patterns, and we are delighted to report that this one is absolutely perfect!  It lays flat with no curling or buckling.  Another sign of a superbly drafted pattern in our opinion!

The Janie Dress can have either a circle skirt or a gathered circle skirt.  In the floral dress, we did the circle skirt option.  But we added length simply by using the gathered circle skirt hem length.  Quick, easy, and super effective to make this pattern last a little longer on a growing baby.

The fabric for this dress is Indigo and Aster knit jersey La Floraison.  We also used it for Annie’s cardigan here.  The collar fabric is some indigo denim-look knit fabric.  I used it because it really accentuates Baby’s eye color!

The other Janie dress we sewed is mostly the same, but we used the gathered circle skirt option.  This was also a very easy dress to sew.  We used some rust bamboo knit leftover from sewing myself a peplum I sewed for myself.  I guess I haven’t shared it here, except in my Me Made May round up post.  You can see it on Instagram here.

The fabric is so lightweight and perfectly cool for summer because it’s bamboo and rayon mixed!  I love wearing my peplum, and I just know this dress will help Baby keep cool in the summer heat.

These 2 Janie Dresses are just the beginning of a summer capsule wardrobe we’re sewing for Baby.  So stay tuned for lots more baby goodness and tons of photos in the near future!  And remember to head over to Project Run & Play for the grand opening tour!  You can enter the giveaway below also.  And get your Project Run & Play patterns here.

Pattern Suggestions for 1 Year Old Capsule Wardrobe

Baby Capsule Wardrobe created and sewn by Skirt Fixation

Baby grew as babies do, and it was time for a new capsule wardrobe!  I learned a few things from her 1st capsule wardrobe, and wanted a change of color scheme.  Plus now I know she’s a girl and not a boy and could take full advantage of cute girl styles!

First I drew out a grid for planning what she needed.  Typically we dress her in layers this time of year, so long sleeve onesies and leggings are staple pieces.  Top that with skirts, dresses and cardigans.  Finish with cute little touches like bonnets and a bubble skirt.

Baby Capsule Wardrobe created and sewn by Skirt Fixation

Each of the pieces can be worn with many other pieces in the capsule wardrobe.  And they can stand alone.  Pieces can be layered or worn along as the weather warms up.

Let’s start with the onesies.  This time I used the Eeny Meeny Bodysuit pattern by Peekaboo Pattern Shop.  When this pattern was released I immediately saw it’s amazing possibilities in building a capsule wardrobe.  Because the less pattern pieces you have to cut out the better, right?  I sewed 3 onesies in different colors.  On the front of each is a heart appliquéd on using scrap fabric from the bubble skirt.

Next I sewed up 3 pairs of leggings in 12-18 month size.  The Lollipop Leggings pattern by Peekaboo Pattern Shop is officially our go to leggings pattern for girls!  Instead of the light blue, I went with a denim knit fabric because Baby is on her knees a lot, and the color will hold up better.  I used a scraps of the floral lawn fabric as a tags on the inside for ease of determining the front from the back.

Next came the skirts.  Of course!  She got 3 total with the Bouncing Bubble skirt I showed you earlier.  The other two are the Spunky Girl Skater Skirt pattern from Peekaboo Pattern Shop.  I used the light blue fabric and a brown stripe.

Those same 2 fabrics were used to make 2 dresses.  (And the brown corduroy dress we made earlier fits her perfectly now, so it’s part of the capsule wardrobe too!)  Plus these 2 blue dresses still fit her too!  I used the Eeny Meeny Dress pattern to make the light blue shift dress, and hacked the pattern a little bit to make the brown striped one too.  (Tutuorial on this coming soon!)

And then we needed cropped 3/4 sleeve cardigans for layering over the top of everything.  The Aster Cardigan stood up to the test.  We made a brown one with a plain collar, and a dark blue one with a faux piping collar.  The same wood buttons from the corduroy dress came in handy for the brown cardigan, and I added 2 accent buttons to the sleeve cuffs just because it was so cute!  Also, note the floral lawn fabric as the bias trim inside the neckline?

Finally, I couldn’t resist sewing a 2nd bonnet for the capsule wardrobe from chambray and (you guessed it) floral lawn fabric!  I used the Evergreen Bonnet pattern.  Allegra embroidered the sprig of daisies on the chambray side.  These bonnets are reversible which is handy for the whole capsule wardrobe concept!  Making bonnets is such a delightful endeavor for me, remember you can buy our bonnets here in the Savvy Noggins shop.

We took photos of Baby every day for a week in her capsule wardrobe.  Each day we can dress her in something different and it’s so fun deciding which combinations to use.

Annie and I also took all these flat lay photos.  She took immense pleasure in deciding which garments to lay out next!

Modified dress to peplum by Skirt Fixation

It’s pretty nice to have a capsule wardrobe for Baby that all coordinates and crosses this time of year when the weather can’t seem to make up it’s mind.  And if we ever get tired of dressing her in brown and blue, there’s always the sloth peplum!

Today I’m over at CaliFabrics sharing my thoughts on fabric suggestions for a child’s capsule wardrobe.  Be sure to check it out.
