Me Made May 2018 Week 5

Phoenix Blouse sewed and reviewed by Skirt Fixation

I know, I know.  We’re into June and I’m still sharing things from May.  But, I’ve been busy, and I wanted to complete my round up of Me Made May skirt outfits.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BjUyDhrh7lQ/?taken-by=skirtfixation

This skirt is the Sandbridge Skirt pattern from Hey June Patterns.  It’s truly lovely, and I’m so excited to share the details of this (and the other Sandbridge Skirt I sewed!) that I’ve planned a whole entire week dedicated to denim coming at you the last week of June.  There’s going to be a giveaway, stunning details, inspiration, resources and more.  So stay tuned!!!  This skirt is sewn with stretch denim.  The place I bought it is sold out, but here’s a very similar stretch denim.

The shirt is a Union St. Tee from Hey June Patterns.  It’s made from cream knit fabric (I can highly recommend this fabric!) and I wear it with everything!  This shirt pattern is reviewed here.

It may appear as if I’m wearing the same skirt as yesterday, and while that skirt is awesome enough to wear 2 days in a row, this is a different skirt. When I have a pattern that I love, I often sew more than 1 at a time. Do you batch sew? Anyway I’m wearing it today so I can get it blogged and share the amazing goodness of them both. And the huge differences. . . This is the other Sandbridge Skirt I sewed.  And I can’t wait to show you the differences between the two skirts!

The top is the Seafarer dolman sleeve top pattern by Sew Much Ado.  It’s sewn using Fleet and Flourish knit fabric by Art Gallery Fabrics.  You can read our review of this top here.

And you probably recognize this outfit from the other day…it’s the Phoenix Blouse by Hey June Patterns sewn in rayon chambray fabric.  The blue I used is sold out, but here’s black rayon chambray.

And the skirt is the Jocole Pencil Skirt sewn in Arizona After knit fabric from Art Gallery Fabrics.  Full review of both these garments here.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjca1Pah6_k/?taken-by=skirtfixation

This skirt is the Simple Pencil Skirt (reviewed here) in textured knit fabric.  (similar fabric here)

The top is a Lane Raglan made with a black micro rib knit modal fabric.   (similar fabric here)

Happy Hey June June! We’re all decked out in @heyjunehandmade to celebrate the occasion, are you? . . Top pattern: #unionsttee by @heyjunehandmade hacked to a peplum just for this occasion! Technically, this was June 1st, but it was another outfit I shared on Instagram!  I’m wearing a Union St. Tee that I added a peplum to.  This peplum top is one of my favorite shirts, so I added another one to my wardrobe.  I used bamboo knit fabric from Blackbird Fabrics, but they’re sold out.  Good thing I found a similar fabric here for you!

Annie is wearing her Camden Raglan dress from this post.  It is made using Art Gallery Fabric Pandalicious knit fabric.

That wraps up Me Made May 2018 for us!  Since it’s not the 1st year we’ve participated, we didn’t get any huge new revelations, but used the opportunity to add to and subtract from our wardrobe.  How about you?  Did you participate in Me Made May?

The photo above is what I wore on the next day of Me Made May.  Sort of.  And I never got it posted to Instagram.  It was one of those days!  I spent the morning in the goat barn with a doe who was having trouble kidding.  Around lunchtime, I had a lunch meeting that simply could not be avoided.  So I showered, threw on this maxi skirt refashioned from a dress (see the original post here) and my white Union St. Tee in Riley Blake Designs white knit fabric.  As soon as I returned, I was back in the barn in my chore clothes until just before supper.  Another shower, and I put on my pajamas for the rest of the evening!  Ah, such is life!

As promised, for anyone who doesn’t follow us on Instagram, here’s the round up of Audrey’s weekly outfits.  It’s fun to look back and see what I wore in past years, and the different ways to pair items of clothing.  Stick around to the end of the post to see if I met my goal for the week!!!

Key Largo Top by Hey June Patterns with ruffle sleeves hack in floral viscose poplin from La Mercerie.

And if you’re following along, you know that I’ve accomplished at least 1 week’s sewing project for me goal for May.  Also, this seems to be a new color palette for me, but I’m totally in love with this fabric.  It’s lightweight, doesn’t wrinkle horribly, and drapes and flows beautifully.

Key Largo Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

In my opinion, it’s the perfect fabric for this pattern.  I highly recommend either and both of these!

Key Largo Top sewn by Skirt Fixation

For some reason, I’ve been attracted to the warm color palette for the first time in my wardrobe.  I love wearing navy blues and blacks, but recently I’ve wanted all the reds, oranges, and yellows.  So keep your eyes on this space to see how long this lasts.

Me Made May Week 4

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

Wrapping up Me Made May today!  Some thoughts on the event and my wardrobe at the end of the pictures!

Me Made May Day 22:

This striped Jocole knit pencil skirt is super comfortable and it matches my gray Sante Fe top perfectly!  I wear both these a lot.

Day 22 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

Perfect outfit for summer months!  Everyone needs a Sante Fe top!  And this pattern is on SALE for 15% off right now with the code SANTEFE15

Me Made May Day 23:

This was the very first v-neck Union Street Tee I made.  Well, the very 1st any v-neck tee I made!  And I love it!

Day 23 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

Love this shirt, here’s my review of the pattern.

Me Made May Day 24:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

I sewed up the Wildflower Top from Blank Slate Patterns and even modified it to become nursing friendly.

Day 24 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

Unfortunately, this version didn’t work!  Bur I think with some changes I could get this to work out.  It would be such a good shirt for nursing!

Me Made May Day 25:

I wore my Jocole Peplum Top.  This version was originally my wearable muslin.

Day 25 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

As with the other peplum top I wore this week, my waistline is not quite back to normal right now, and I’m going to keep blaming it on having a baby for several more months!

Me Made May Day 26:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BUjiWXmh9hS/?taken-by=skirtfixation

This is my favorite skirt refashion ever!  And my black Lane Raglan  that I still wear ALL THE TIME!

Day 26 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

These two are in constant rotation!

Me Made May Day 27:

This navy blue Seafarer Top I made (unblogged) goes with just about everything in my skirt wardrobe!  And this skirt is reviewed here.

Day 27 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

Mr. Skirt Fixation just purged his closet again…I think it’s time to make another one of these skirts!

Me Made May Day 28:

I love this Cheyenne Tunic in Art Gallery Fabrics voile so much!  And this Syrah skirt is dreamy too!

Day 28 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

I’m pretty sure that if these two garments ever wear out I’ll just make exact replicas so I can always wear them!

Me Made May Day 29:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BUreKidBUiB/?taken-by=skirtfixation

This Sante Fe top  was the 2nd one I made.  And I wore it with my Jocole yoga A-line skirt.

Day 29 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

The fabric I used for this shirt was closeout from Hancock Fabrics, and it doesn’t have good recovery.  This shirt gets pretty stretched out.

Me Made May Day 30:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BUuBtvahIa5/?taken-by=skirtfixation

My new Seafarer top (again!!!) and a refashioned skirt from several years ago.

Day 30 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

When it’s good, it’s good!

Me Made May Day 31:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BUxCdndBb94/?taken-by=skirtfixation

A brand new Syrah Skirt (blog post coming soon!) made from this fantastic shibori dyed knit fabric from JoAnn (affiliate link) and (surprise, surprise) that same navy Seafarer!

Day 31 Verdict:

Me Made May skirt outfits from Skirt Fixation

What I learned from Me Made May 2017:

I need to replace quite a few of the garments I made when I was learning to sew knits.

I need to sew with more solid colors more so I can pair things better.

I’m actually running short on Me Made skirts!

I need to find(or draft?) a good denim skirt pattern.

Do you have any suggestions for my “Me Made” wardrobe?

I forgot to post the “Me Mades” I’ve been wearing here on the blog!  So you get week 3 today and week 4 a little later.

Me Made May Day 14:

I love the Runway Skirt from the cover of the pattern, and since the godets are cream rather than white, I made myself a new Union St. Tee to match!  (affiliate link)

Day 14 Verdict:

Me Made May outfits from Skirt Fixation

I love both of these garments lots and lots!  I tried to wear a store bought sweater vest with it, but it did’t fit!  Just be time to make one!

Me Made May Day 15:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BUHeWflBUpt/?taken-by=skirtfixation

Wearing the 1st Syrah Skirt I made, and my Jocole peplum in super soft Art Gallery Fabrics knit fabric!

Day 15 Verdict:

Me Made May outfits from Skirt Fixation

I will probably wait a few more months before putting this top back in my regular wardrobe.

Me Made May Day 16:

My Lane Raglan (affiliate link) in black that I wear ALL. THE. TIME. and a refashioned skirt.

Day 16 Verdict:

Me Made May outfits from Skirt Fixation

This skirt is going to have to go!  And the Lane Raglan is getting worn from so much wear…time to make another one!

Me Made May Day 17:

Guess what, another Syrah Skirt from my very 1st Cali Fabrics blog post, and my wearable muslin (unblogged, I think!) of the Granville Shirt.

Day 17 Verdict:

Me Made May outfits from Skirt Fixation

Time to sew a button back on!  And wait a few months to wear it again…

Me Made May Day 18:

One of my very favorite striped Lane Raglans, (affiliate link) and my black Jocole Yoga Skirt.

Day 18 Verdict:

Me Made May outfits from Skirt Fixation

It’s soooo hard to get rid of a favorite shirt…but this one needs some repair before I wear it again in public…if ever!

Me Made May Day 19:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BURj4XzhkNK/?taken-by=skirtfixation

I chose my very comfortable Seafarer Top in the very lovely Art Gallery Fabric floral. (affiliate link)

Day 19 Verdict:

This pattern and this fabric is one of my favorite combinations!

Me Made May Day 20:

I just had to wear this Runway Skirt again when I got to go to Quilt Market for a few hours because I knew April Rhodes, who designed this Observer knit fabric (affiliate link) would be there showing her newest lines of fabric!

Day 20 Verdict:

Me Made May outfits from Skirt Fixation

I also wore a new Seafarer Top I made myself just for the occasion!

Me Made May Day 6:

Day 7 verdict:

Me Made May with Skirt Fixation

This is my Cheyenne Tunic (reviewed here) and a Runway Skirt.  Both are keepers, I just need to repair the hem!

Me Made May Day 8

Day 8 verdict:

Me Made May with Skirt Fixation

I put on this Julia Sweater in hopes of loving it again.  But it’s definitely seen it’s best days and going to have to go.  The Jocole yoga skirt is a keeper.

Me Made May Day 9:

Day 9 verdict:

Me Made May with Skirt Fixation

I’m not sure what happened to my Julia Cardigan, but it’s completely unwearable and stretched out of shape beyond repair.  I guess that’s what I get for using cheaper fabric.  The scuba tank in great, and the Nani Iro skirt is divine…so they are both staying in my wardrobe.

Me Made May Day 10:

Day 10 verdict:

Me Made May with Skirt Fixation

Still in love with my Sailor Top in Mille Fleur fabrics!  It took me quite a few times to get this shirt to fit my tall, wide-shouldered self, but we’re there now!

Me Made May Week 1

Just like last year, I’m participating in Me Made May.  As a refresher, Me Made May is an event where people who sew their clothes wear them for the month of May.  Everyone personalizes it to what works for them, and I’m doing the same.  This year I’m using the Me Made May event to assess my wardrobe, looking for handmade gaps and to determine what I wear and don’t wear and why.  Then I’ll summon up the courage to get rid of the things that don’t work…even though I made them!  For some reason I have a really hard time getting rid of garments I made.  I’ll summarize each week here, and let you know how it goes.

Me Made May Day 1:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTjVdtCBv82/?taken-by=skirtfixation

Day 1 verdict:

This is the Marlene Shirt and the nursing modification works really good!  But I’ll probably use it on a different shirt in the future, or lower the armscyle on this shirt if I make another one.

Me Made May Day 2:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTlyHqrhbTB/?taken-by=skirtfixation

Day 2 verdict:  This Santa Fe top is a keeper!  And the Jocole a line yoga skirt works great too.

Me Made May Day 3:

Day 3 verdict:

This Lonetree Vest is absolutely amazing!  I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it, since I used top quality Art Gallery Fabrics canvas and made 3 muslins before sewing it up so the fit is perfect.  This ombre Syrah Skirt is one of my absolute favorites too.  I just need to repair the hem.  My double needle and I are not good friends right now!

Me Made May Day 4:

Day 4 verdict:

The Mountain Pose Yoga Pants need repairs, for some reason my machine has a little trouble sewing the knit stitch in long continuous lines…and starts to skip after a while.  The Jocole pencil skirt and Halifax Hoodie are always in constant rotation and good shape!

Me Made May Day 5:

Day 5 verdict:

I really do like the collar of this Parisian top and it’s shape, but it’s old, pilling and the collar is off center.  So I might make this pattern again, and pay special attention to collar placement, use better fabric, and lower the arm cycle and widen the shoulders a bit.  I’ve got a couple other cardigans, and only a few things to wear this Julia Cardigan with, so it’s going to have to go.

I’m also posting pictures of my kids wearing handmades every day over on Instagram, so if you want to see it as it happens, follow us on Instagram!  Here’s what my kids wore this week:

Day 1:

Thoughts on Me Made May:

Me Made May is an event that is held on Instagram in May.  The purpose is to promote handmade clothing in contrast to factory/third world country sewn garments.  As with our Buy or DIY skirts series, it illustrated very well the advantages of sewing your own clothing.  Many seamstresses who participate grow tired of posting selfies in their handmade duds, and indeed that was the very reason I dropped out of Me Made May last year.  I don’t do selfies, but I do wear handmade clothing (almost) every day.  So this year I thought I’d try flat lay photos to show what I was wearing each day.  I learned some things about flat lay photo layouts through the process:

  • My most “liked” photo was this one I’m guessing people liked the fabric of the top and the color combination.
  • My most commented on photo was this one due to questions about the fabric and pattern sources.  I’m guessing the bright colors caught everyone’s eye as they were scrolling.
  • My personal favorite outfit was this one…probably because it is new!
  • Shoes look better when laid like this with one on it’s side.
  • Lighting matters
  • Wrinkles matter

That’s about it!  Got any other tips for flat lay photos for me?  How about handmade clothes?  Or Me Made May?
