Last year, I made the Liesl & Co. Bistro Dress for Allegra.  At her request, I modified the shape and length of it to make a black formal orchestra dress as was needed.  But when we bought the Bistro Dress pattern, we both loved it just exactly like it was and wanted to make one as the pattern is written.  The time had come!

Since we already had the pattern cut out and tiled, the Bistro Dress was very simple to make on the preparation side of things.  We picked up some navy sateen from JoAnn fabrics.  JoAnn’s had 2 kinds of sateen, one in the quilting section, and one in the apparel/bottom-weight section.  The second on had a little bit of stretch to it, and if possible, I totally recommend getting that kind.  It just makes the garment FIT so beautifully.

I only ran in to one little problem when constructing the Bistro Dress.  I installed the invisible zipper where the pattern piece showed, but feel the final placement should have been higher because there was a gap at the top when finished.

No problem and a few short hand stitches by Allegra and the problem was solved!  And being that it’s an INVISIBLE zipper, no one has noticed yet.

It took Allegra and I a few tries to get the belt loops positioned exactly right.  No fault of the pattern, just clumsy pinning on my part I think.

You see, Allegra and I work as a team when I’m sewing something for her.  I sew and she rips out my mistakes.  Then I keep on sewing.  A pretty sweet exchange if you ask me!

One thing I really appreciate about the Bistro Dress pattern is that the belt is not cut on the bias.  There is really no need for it to be, and because it’s so long, a bias cut would use a lot of fabric.

This dress fits Allegra to a tee and she really, really appreciates that!  She’s never been able to buy a ready to wear dress as they just don’t fit properly.

But this one fits like a glove.  Probably due to the fact that we cut the pattern in different sizes at the bust, waist and hips.  And we extended the darts a little longer (like last time) to account for her high waisted figure.

Allegra wore this dress this past Sunday and received so very many compliments!  What do you think?  Did we do a good job on the Bistro Dress?

  1. Gorgeous! What a great team. Congrats!

  2. Allegra, you look stunning in this dress! I have had this pattern on my radar for a while but so far I haven’t purchased it. Now I really want to make it– I think in a black sateen it would be the perfect little black dress! I love the sewing/seam ripping system you guys have going. I need to find someone to do my seam ripping!!
