We started with deer fabric from Girl Charlee. This little fabric is so irresistible!  If you want to make this easy DIY Valentine with kids, here’s how you can do that!  First the step by step, and then some tips for working with smaller children.

Make a heart template and trace it onto the fabric.  We made our template sized so that we could use every deer, but if you wanted, you could make it bigger and cut out every other deer.  Then cut out the little deer hearts.

Take sheets of card stock and cut them in half.

Then stamp out a little message on the bottom half of the card stock using pink ink and letter stamps.

We stamped “Be My Deer” but there are several other variations that could be written in a nice hand or stamped.

After letting them dry, move over to the sewing machine.  Stitch around the edge of the heart.  We found that using a ballpoint needle and a stippling foot worked best as this is knit fabric.  We used soft pink thread to coordinate with the little deer.

We used bright pink thread in the bobbin, and when we were finished, there was a cute little stitched heart on the back of the card stock.

Inside this stitched heart, stamp a heart stamp.

Underneath this, the children sign their names.

In the course of an hour we churned out quite a pile of them!

All that was left to do was stuff them in envelopes, address them and mail them…with heart stamps, of course!

Some tips for making these Valentines with small children:

Have several steps prepared ahead of time…the card stock cut, the stamps readied, even the hearts cut out and sewn on if your children have no interest or ability to help with that step.

Be prepared for them to loose interest and you finish these by yourself if there is a huge stack!

Give a very young child a piece of scrap paper and turn them loose with the stamps while an older child works on spelling out the message.

Sewing knits to paper is a little tricky, so be prepared for a few tucks…it doesn’t really matter, no one is going to be wearing it!  And everyone will be so delighted with your creativity and the deer little valentine!!
