The next skirt in the series All The Skirt: Spit Up & Stilettos is the Emilie Skirt. During the planning phase of this edition of All The Skirts, Allegra asked for this skirt to be made into a cello skirt for her. What is a cello skirt? Well if you are a cellist, you know that certain skirts are able to be worn while playing a cello, and some are not! Circle skirts are in, pencil skirts are out! You get the idea. So the Emilie Skirt and a cello perform a lovely duet.

The Emilie Skirt pattern states the level is easy and the time required is 2-3 hours. I sewed it up in less than two from start to finish, partly because I didn’t add a lining to this thick fabric, and partly because my sewing speed tends toward allegro, not adagio! Except when sewing knits…then I’m more around a largo speed!

This pattern is very simple, but has so many nice elements that make it sophisticated enough to wear to a concert where Yo-Yo Ma plays “The Swan.” There is a waistband, a lining (if you choose!) and an invisible zipper.

We were informed that an invisible zipper is easy to sew with the right zipper foot, so we ordered one, but it didn’t arrive in time to make this skirt, so we made a lapped zipper application, and it looks very nice too, thank you very much! I love the big white button Allegra chose for the skirt, it goes perfect with that fabric. You really should try sewing up this or any other Spit Up & Stilettos pattern, they are free and awesome!

More about that fabric…it’s from the stash, so no guarantees that anything I write about it is correct! It seems to be a stretchy twill sort of fabric with a sheen to it. I wish you could pet your computer screen to feel this fabric, it’s so awesome. We were gifted over 5 yards of this beauty, so you’ll probably see it again sometime! Just to be completely honest, the zipper we had to buy because we didn’t have a red zipper in the stash…

Allegra loves her new cello skirt, and we love hearing her play the cello in it! (Well in any skirt…she’s been playing since she was 5 years old!)  If you are intrigued about cello skirts now, go check out our Cello Skirts board on Pinterest!
