Today we delightedly present you the first skirt in the All The Skirts: Sis Boom & Imagine Gnats Edition. We just could not help ourselves when we received our package of fabric from Rachel of Imagine Gnats. The Cotton + Steel fabric was so fun that we had to sew it up first. And we knew it was going to make the most perfect Patchwork Twirl Skirt from Sis Boom/Scientific Seamstress.
The reason The Patchwork Twirl Skirt takes a while to sew is the sheer volume of the skirt. The bottom ruffle ends up being over 25 feet long! And it is gathered a significant amount.
This is required to achieve the fantastic twirl factor of the skirt.
Here you can see the back of the skirt. Just as fun as the front, right?
The only change I made to The Patchwork Twirl Skirt was to cut out one of the fabrics at a different angle than suggested. This was the pink arrow fabric because I wanted the arrows to run vertically rather than horizontally.
And then there’s the fabric. We’ve been hearing about Cotton + Steel all spring and summer, and when we finally got ours, we understood why.
But what sets Imagine Gnats apart is Rachel! She not only picked out this fabulous selection of fabrics for us, but shipped it super fast.
And also there was the not so little fact that she sent us 1/2 yard pieces when we only requested 1/4 yard pieces.
That’s right, you can make The Patchwork Twirl Skirt with 7 fat quarters. Which makes fabrics like Cotton + Steel or Liberty of London within affordability range for every seamstress.
So when you see a new fabric set released and you can’t decide which ones to choose, don’t! Just grab your Patchwork Twirl Skirt pattern and 7 fat quarters.
And best of all (in Annie’s opinion) those 7 fat quarters include enough fabric to be able to make a skirt for a doll, or a bear!
Allegra made the skirt for Annie’s bear, which makes it easy for a beginning seamstress.
Although the inside is not visible, The Patchwork Twirl Skirt is very clean with all the exposed raw edges finished. This is especially great because all the gathering sometimes frays the edges.

So we draped everything else in white, including Annie’s shirt.
It wasn’t hard to get Annie animated about this skirt, but Allegra put on some music and Annie just couldn’t hold still!
She twirled and she danced and she pirouetted and she boogied! The Patchwork Twirl Skirt really got her excited!
As usual, Allegra shot some great photos!
Okay, so many great photos that this post is beginning to be hugely picture heavy! We should have issued a warning at the beginning!
The rest of us decided we want The Patchwork Twirl Skirt in our size! So we can dance and play with Annie!
When cooler hits, we plan to layer this skirt with a turtleneck, some leggings and boots.
Annie, you should really take a bow for all the fantastic modeling and dancing!
Ah, what a ladylike little curtsy!
