We love working with denim minis so much and thought it’d be fun to research denim history. Here’s what we found out!
During the gold rush, men couldn’t find pants strong enough to last for a good while. Their work was hard so they didn’t have much time to find a good pair of pants. In 1853, the gold rush was at its highest height and men still didn’t have pants, but that was when Levi Strauss, a 24-year-old German immigrant left for San Francisco in hopes of starting a dry goods store there.
Soon after he started the store a miner asked him what he was selling. When Levi Strauss told him that he had rough canvas for tents and other things the miner said that Levi should have brought pants, and told him how he couldn’t find a pair of pants strong enough to last. Levi then started making pants out of the canvas. Miners liked the pants but they complained that they tended to chafe. Levi Strauss then found a good cloth. It was from France and was twilled cotton cloth. This cloth was a certain kind of cloth that had a twill weave. The shape of the weave was diagonal. Levi made the first jeans out of this fabric and the miners were happy with their long-lasting, durable new pants.
